Quadratic Equations

Use the Discriminant as a Quick Check

Before solving a quadratic, quickly calculate the discriminant (b² - 4ac). If it's negative, there are no real solutions - don't waste time trying to solve. If it's zero, you'll get one repeated solution (perfect square case). This 5-second check tells you what to expect.

Quick Check - Multiply Your Factors Back

After factorizing a quadratic, always multiply the factors back out to verify they're correct. This catches sign errors immediately. For example, if you think x² - 5x + 6 factors to (x-2)(x-3), check: (x-2)(x-3) = x² -5x + 6 ✓. This 10-second check saves hours of confusion.

Problem Solving

Draw It Out - Visual Problem Solving

For ANY word problem involving motion, forces, or spatial relationships, draw a diagram. Don't try to keep everything in your head. Sketch the scenario, label known values, and mark what you're trying to find. This 30-second step helps you understand the problem and prevents costly misinterpretations. I've seen drawing diagrams improve accuracy by 40% in my students.

The Negative Sign Trap in Acceleration

Gravitational acceleration is ALWAYS negative (-9.8 m/s²) when you define upward as positive. Many students forget this and use +9.8. If your projectile goes up then comes down, but your calculator gives a negative time or your answer doesn't make sense, check your signs first - it's almost always the culprit.

Projectile Motion

Time Connects Horizontal and Vertical Motion

In projectile motion problems, time is the same for both horizontal and vertical motion. This is your most powerful tool! If you find time from vertical motion (using the fact that displacement equals zero when it lands), you can immediately use that time in the horizontal direction to find range.
